Uneven upper or lower jaw growth can result in throwing the jaw alignment out of proportion. This will cause problems when speaking and chewing. This can be a family trait but most of the time it is a random unequal growth between the upper and lower jaws. When properly treated with orthognathic surgery patients will see improvement in chewing.
The Cure: Orthognathic Surgery (Corrective Jaw Surgery)
Corrective jaw surgery includes setting the bones of the face into proper alignment. Usually a patient will need braces before jaw surgery. Orthognathic surgery can be accomplished in some cases in an outpatient setting, however, in more intricate cases the patient may have to stay overnight in the hospital.
A successful orthognathic surgery will improve a patient’s way of life in several ways. These will include, advancement in chewing efficiency, speech clarity and oftentimes one will see an improvement in facial appearance.
