Oral surgery includes a broad assortment of procedures in the mouth, jaw and facial structures surrounding them. These procedures are usually performed with local anesthesia or under complete sedation. Your comfort and quick, comfortable recovery are our primary concerns. Common oral surgery treatments include:
Removal of Teeth
Teeth may need to be removed throughout an individual’s life for many reasons. Orthodontists may advise removal of perfectly normal teeth to eradicate crowding. During the late teens or possibly the early twenties, wisdom teeth cause problems for nine out of ten persons. In most cases an early extraction of impacted teeth is advised. Wisdom teeth are commonly “impacted” (meaning they are obstructed from normal eruption and remain in soft tissue or bone). Serious difficulties can occur from impacted teeth, such as infections, bone cysts, crowding, and damage to adjacent teeth. As a person matures, wisdom teeth removal becomes a much more challenging procedure. Complications become more frequent and severe.
Bony Ridge Preparation or Preservation
Before dentures are fashioned by a dentist, bone may need to be reshaped or removed on the bony ridge which holds the teeth. For example a torus is an overgrowth of bone that may become irritated with chewing of hard food.
Grafting Procedures to Preserve or Increase Jawbones
Both bone and soft tissue grafts may be determined to restore form and shape. Bone can be moved from one area of the body to another. Similarly, a soft tissue (gum) graft may prevent recession or tooth exposure on the lower front teeth.
Salivary Gland Problems
Saliva is essential to wet food before swallowing. Saliva is created from glands that can be obstructed or infected. When obstructed these glands can be removed or unblocked.
Removal of Jaw Cysts and Oral Growths
Sometimes growths and/or jaw cysts will develop over time. Any foreign growth or cyst can and should be removed.
